Cobh Native Charlie Ryan took the Gold today at the Darts event in the 70-79 years age category. This is his second Gold at the 21st World Transplant Games having bagged the Gold in the Pétanque event yesterday. Charlie is not a new face to Team Ireland and has been a hugely positive and influential member of the team since his first European Games.
Charlie is also not a newcomer to Darts and has impressively won 5 European Gold medals in previous years but was delighted to have won his first Gold at a Darts World Transplant Games event. Charlie was thrilled and noted that winning the Gold at the World Games was a goal he was working towards, “I am thrilled to have achieved my goal! I have been practising every day of the week so it’s excellent to get the result.” Charlie played exceptionally well against stiff competition from the Australian and Hong Kong team.
Notably this summer is also Charlie’s ten-year liver transplant anniversary. Following his successes, he took time to reflect on his donor, “I am thinking of my donor and their family today, if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be here, I am very thankful to them”. Charlie will also compete in the Darts Triples Event this afternoon with fellow Team Ireland athletes Mike Keohane and Lenny Ryan, he will also compete in Doubles Bowling tomorrow with Artane native Anthony Byrne.
